Well ive got a deal cooking on a like new set of cat 1.6 rockers for a
C note. I thought with my 325psi spring pressure and tight side
Clearance for oil control...? I will change the adjusters to smith bros.
I think ive seen guys have success with these with flat tappet cams

I have no concern with the unbushed alloy steel rocker at that spring pressure as long as they are run on a correct matching shaft. I'm running comp's alloy steel rocker at or above that pressure with no problem as have others.

The Cat rocker does (or did) have extra material near the roller tip which could hit the retainer. Die grinder or file may be needed? In terms of rocker to shaft clearance and matching with correct shafts I have no way to tell. I also like the "plain bearing" type rocker vs the needle bearing type. The needle bearings change the balance of the oil system and may require additional mods like restrictors. Stock style lubrication of the rocker arm push rod pivot gets iffy.

On a budget, I guess I'd prefer a hydraulic cam with .5" lift or a bit more and OE stamped rockers vs mechanical cam with the Cat's.

Mine have worked out fine so far. They have the same bearing as the Harland's (at least mine do). With that said I think it helps to pay attention to the shaft size. Harland uses an .875 shaft and when I found the specs on the bearing it is made for an .875 shaft. I run mine with Smith Bro adjusters and a hardened .875 shaft made from Thompson rod.

The ratio is off but at least they are consistent (1.7>1.655). They were also spot on for valve tip placement on my 906 heads.

I had a store credit with KMJ and took the money and bought some of the non bearing aluminum rockers and I have to say they do not look bad at all. I would still change out the adjusters. When I mocked them up they will require shorter pushrods, which they told me was some feed back they got on some of the sets they have sold. I bought them as I have in my mind at some point I may try the Comp .650 cam and with my 1.65 rockers my p2v clearance isn't going to happen.

Did you machine the shaft from a blank?

I ran CAT rockers for 3 seasons with a roller cam and 230# on the seat. I had no issues with them but I was using Harland sharp shafts with them.

Small block here but I have run Cat roller 1.6 rockers for at least 5 years on my roller engine. I have never had any problem with them at all. I did break one a couple of years ago but it was due to misalignment and not the part itself. I am going to Harland Sharpe soon but I have nothing but good things to say about the rockers.

I have an older set of them and the only thing that bothered me was the actual machining of the locknuts was just plain wrong. Instead of the nut screwing on straight, they had drilled and tapped
some of them crooked, So the nut was not true and flat when you screwed it down so it couldn't hold the ball stud correctly in place.
Easy fix though, just replace the nuts with decent ones, they were metric though so it was hard to find the large thin ones.

You can buy Thompson rod in an .875 od within an 1/8" of the correct length, which works fine. From there you just have to have them drilled (center, holddowns and oil). I tapped the ends and screwed in plugs. The Thompson rod was less than $50 to my door and less than $50 to have them drilled.
