Another quick question on my 68 Satellite 318 to 383 conversion. I’ve got a high performance coil an I’m going to be getting an electric fuel pump but no other high performance electronic parts so far. My question is can I get a stock re-manufactured alternator which i believe is a 55amp? Will i need to get a more high performance alternator with a higher amp out put? What if i find out i need to add some electric fans later? should i go with a high amp just in case? if so how many amps should i be looking for?

Thanks in advance,
Atom

The stock alternators don't charge too well at idle. Knowing that before I did my 383 swap, I purchased a powermaster 75 amp alternator. It bolts directly in with stock brackets and worked well. I've since done the 60 amp Denso swap and this one works better than the powermaster did. You need to get some special brackets but it was a very inexpensive upgrade.

If you do go with a higher amperage alternator it is a good idea to upgrade the wiring. I bypassed my amp meter, added a good sized wire from the post on the alternator to the big stud on the starter relay, and added a relay for my headlights.

Now at idle (around 800-825rpm) I can have all the electric components on and it still charges at idle.

I realized i didnt really answer your question. haha With just the fuel pump as the only additional electric load I would think you would "ok" with a stock 55 amp alternator. Although I would be a little worried about it at idle. Same with possible adding electric fans later down the road. The good fans that will actually cool your car down require over 30 amps at start up..but again I would be worried about having enough to power that stuff while you are sitting at a stop light at idle.

Whew I’m glad you brought up bypassing the ammeter... I almost forgot i was going to do that. I remember how notorious mopars were for burning those up being that the current runs through it from the alt. i did one on my old 70 duster and since i have the motor out of my satellite it’d be much easier this time around

I better go with a 60amp then. I’m on a budget so i’m trying to save anywhere i can... I found this Driveworks reman 60amp part number 7000. Think that one would do me up ok?

here’s a link to it

Thanks again for the reminder,

if that is a re manufactured stock one...then you still might have problems with low output at idle. Here is a link to the powermaster I used.

Its a bit pricey but worked very well. The denso swap I did was cheaper than that though and in my opinion works even better. Here is a link to the instructions in the tech archives:

Here is the alternator (although you would need one with a v-belt pulley)

And here are the brackets:

With all that being said...the stock style might work just fine...i would just be concerned about the stock alternator keeping up with a elec fuel pump and elec fans at low engine speeds.
