The overhead on my 05 pretty consistently shows 11.9.
I have never bothered to hand calculate it. With my 4 mile commute I don't get excited about it, and really, if it is that big an issue there might be some other questions you need to ask yourself first.

Now brace yourself for all the diesel people to start in with the "my 93 has been around the world twice on one tank of fuel" stuff....

Strictly my

My 1500 4x4 only gets 12-14mpg I'd say about the same.

My 2004 4wd, non MDS engine 2500 with 3.73 axles and AT gets 13-14 MPG average. On highway about 15 - 16 MPG. at least as good if not better than '97 4WD Ram with 360 & 3.92 axles, and a lot more power.

I have been wondering the same thing. Anybody know when the MDS arrived? Was it standard equipment or optional?

That is a great looking truck,I wish that color was available when I bought mine.
Mine is an '08(I know, newer than what you asked for),2500,5.7,4x4,Quad Cab,long bed,3.73 gears, and it'll get,at best,a hair over 16 mpg on the highway, and if I'm lucky 10 mpg in town. Both of those figures are from the computer.Half tons get better milage, but they are just half tons.

my 03 2500 gets 12mpg with 4.10s. its a huge tank so pretty much every tank is mixed driving, but it seems like no matter where i go, it always calculates out to 12. it did improve to 12 when i added a magnaflow muffler and volant cold air intake. all these years and all this technology i think thats pretty bad. good truck though.

My buddies '05 2500 SWB Hemi 4x4 auto 3.73 gets around 10-12MPG. I have a '05 2500 LWB CTD auto 4.10 that averages 17 mpg. We both have 35 gallon tanks, I get roughly 600 miles out of one tank full and he gets around 400 miles. Since diesel is finally slightly cheaper here now than reg unleaded, I'm smiling

Both have been and are great trucks!

Back in 03 I traded a 99 ram 1500 4x4 quad 360 (avg 12-14)mpg for a new 03 Hemi quad 4x4 2500. The dealer promised that I would be able to match mpg. He was mistaken. On average I was getting 10 mpg with the hemi. 8 when I towed a 7000lb trailer. On a trip to Carlisle, the very best I could do was 15 and that was all highway, nothing in tow, at 60mph or less. After 2 months and 2400 miles I was so disappointed with the mileage, I went to trade up for a diesel. They wanted me to take a 12k loss in the trade. I knew I was in for a hit but 12g's, no way. So I kept it and tried to improve the mileage any way I could. Drive slower, max air in tires, ect. Still sucked. And don't believe your overhead console either. That thing always stated 3 to 4 more mpg than I was actually getting. The best way to get an accurate mpg reading is to fill your tank until the pump clicks off, drive around and track your mileage, refill your tank at same pump until it clicks off. Divide miles by gallons used. After dealing with the bad mileage and the truck rusting out from underneath me (brake lines, exhaust manifolds, spark plugs and coils) I traded in before my extended warranty (7 years)expired and gave Dodge one more chance with a 2009 2500 diesel quad. Better mileage (around 15 avg) and I can tow a house. No snowplow or parking in a dirt drive this time to help prevent rust and keeping fingers crossed for better luck with this one. Even with sucky mileage and rust issues, Dodges still look better then any Ford or Chevy out there.
