I have a fairly good built 440 bored .040 over Indy heads mild port work oil mods done and a solid lift cam & 1.6 roller rockers TTI step headers and a 727 trans with a boss hog 3200-3600 stall & 391 gears i have a big rad & fan shroud as seen in the picture but i don't have a clutch fan on it and running a 160 stat what could it be.??? Maybe timing. Or what can anyone offer some simple ideas.!
I ask these things cause i have a friend in NY that has a 500ci big block motor in a 69 dart that is a true 9 sec street driven car and he is running a slant six rad with a 160 stat & factory shroud & clutch fan and even on the hottest days it only get to 200 period.!

#1 is what speed does it overheat. What temp is it reaching? Overheating since built? timing/mixture in ballpark? I'd remove/check the stat for a quick/easy test & when you solve it I'd go to at least a 180 but that's a sep issue.

that shroud looks like it would impede air flow at highway speed
What temp is it running to? I would think a clutch fan with a factory shroud will work better.

When you're driving at highway speed lots of air passes through the radiator. If the shroud is too tight the air can't get through. That means air can't pick up heat from the radiator. The radiator gets hot and you overheat.

Ok how much room should be from the fan blades to the edge of the shroud.? This is my worst problem i have had with any car ever.

Want the blades (not the tip to shroud clearance but front to rear depth) ~1/2-2/3 into the shroud but I say that's not it . what speed is it overheating (& how hot)

1st thing to check is the thermostat. Especially this time of year if the car has sat a lot over the winter. I just got done replacing a Mr. Gasket high flow that was stuck closed in my 451.
