What do you guys think about running a flange that has a round port on a D shaped exhaust port. My new HEMI has a D shaped exhaust port. The flanges I was looking at have round port that is slightly bigger at the widest point of the D shaped port. SO no interference anywhere. Would it be better to get a D shaped flange and then dolly the tubes to match the flange? Seems like alot of extra work but would it be worth it? Thanks fellas

Get the proper flange and fit the tube to it... I make a form for port shape then hammer or press it in

In some of my research, i was told to open the exhaust port up to the round flange and have seen pictures to where others have done that. i was told the intake and exhaust ratio is pretty far off and to do as much work as possible on the exhaust side. i was even told to put a larger valve in

Everything that applies to the intake side also applies to the exhaust side. An exact match would be ideal, a tube bigger than the port is a better scenario than having interference. The bottom of the port is filled in because velocity is slow there, most of the flow in an exhaust port is through the top of the port. So, the top and sides are the most important to match for flow. In most cases, except very high output per cube race motors a slight mismatch at the port to flange transition can help with reversion. I wouldn't open up the port, unless you know porting you could kill velocity in the port. Is it worth it? Up to you, if you are building the headers might as well make it perfect. Is it going to make a 10, 20, 50 hp difference? Probably not.

My tube's are larger than my port's and there is a pretty good step from the port to the tube on the bottom of the port, I am also using a adapter plate to fit the w2/w5 header flange to the head and I am not aware of any performance loss from the port shape that Ryan put in the heads to a round tube flange,, in a perfect world it would be best to make it all match but how much work do you want to do to get there, at least the flange does not overlap and cover part of the port then I would say you need to fix that.

I agree with you on a W-series head but it doesn't work on a raised port Hemi head. They are too high plus have a different bolt pattern. if the flanges do bolt up, you could always weld a transition plate inside the floor of the header tube(s).

There were anti-reversion headers built and sold. Still plenty of conversation about them, do a search. Here's one. http://www.custom-car.us/exhaust/header.aspxSems from a quick look that there is no formula or design that is proven at this time. Unless you are going to built another set and can back-to-back A-B-A test them, it would seem like a bunch of effort to try to fix it without knowing what the result is.
