Can you run open exhaust manifolds the same way you would open headers for a short period of time? I was asking because I'm going to bring my car to Midas for them to put the exhaust on. I was wondering if I trailer it there if I could start it up for a few minutes to pull it on and off the trailer.

Thanks

No reason you can't if everything burnable is out of the way.

DO THIS or chance the possiblity of hurting the exh valves. IF they get nice and toasty ...and then the cool air hits them .. it can damage them. NEVER seen it happen .. but I have heard of it doing so.

You know, that "valve damage" story has been passed around for years. I have never heard of it actually happening.
I have ran open manifolds before PLENTY of times with zero ill effects. The noise is nearly intolerable though.
Why go to the trouble and expense of using a trailer? Crank 'er up and get it done!

Did you see my newest title? Is it wrong to admit that I like it?

If it's a stock application have the shop make you the head pipes, bolt them up and drive it there. It us to be a common practice, back when we had real custom exhaust guys.

Careful, your character's showing!

Shoot, for $45 call a tow truck and have it carted over. You're going to spend as much or more on headpipes or running around to find some flex.

As for the "warped valves" old wives' tale, I refer to a big Wisconsin 12 hp 1-cylinder we used to run the grain augur on the farm. The muffler blew off and after dark you could see the exhaust valve at yellow heat, straight in the open exhaust port. That engine ran like that for years with hundreds of on-off cycles. As the guy who had to start it with a hand crank, I can say for sure that the exhaust valve wasn't bothered by the abuse.

R.

No reason you can't if everything burnable is out of the way.

I doubt you will experience any problems. I have done this quite a few times over the years. Starter wire, speedo and safety switch wires should be out of the way before hand. It's not like your going to go cruising in it.

How about when I first fire the engine to break the cam in? It would be at least a 20 min run

back in the day i used to run my car with no pipe just out the mannys.

loved it at night on the highway,it would have fire shooting down to the ground at 70 mph

never hurt the valves on it

now if it was straight out the exhast ports,I could see cold air rushing it to warp the valves.
