Anybody have info on this car? There doesn't seem to be anything on the car or it's owner/drivers after S&M sold it...other than some guy that owned a dragstrip in Louisiana campaigned it as SuperChicken.

It's rumored that it was in a wreck in Georgia in 1978 and a 70 Roadrunner grille was put on it. Somebody posted pics post-accident in another thread, but they are corrupt.

Rusty Butterworth campaigned a 69 Roadrunner with a 440+6 in the 70's...any connection? No pics of that car either. Can't even find info on Rusty, let alone the car.

If you've got pics, names, info, or dates, please post...I'm amazed there is so little info on the net about this car.

Ther was an article 10-20 years ago about a drag 'bird that they found in the back of a shop.
Seem to remember it being on the 'bay and it being discussed right around the time the market started falling a couple years back. Not sure if it was this one or the sister vehicle.

Many people are here and there, but that's where these are really researched.

I've heard that it got "lost" somewhere in LA. Anybody else run it as a bracket car...other than the SuperChicken fella? I think there were only a handfull of birds run in NHRA/AHRA.

You gotta read hemifred's answer. he is the guy for these race cars, and if he says it's gone, that's pretty much it...

I did read that originally now that you mention it. I didn't re-read the entire thread again and thought they were saying it was turned into a bracket car.

What a shame that someone could let that happen to such a cool car. Like the 72 motown missle thread.

Hemifred, you know anymore details about how/where it was lost, or who raced the Sox bird after they sold it? I've heard might still hold record from 1972, 73, 74, and 77. Got any pics of it after the crash?

No NHRA or other records last that long. Other than some obscure title at a track in someone's back yard. I don't know what kind of record it could still hold unless it was for the fastest S&M car with an ugly paint job.

Some of the stories I heard first hand from Ronnie about the bird are far from what you might expect about a famous race car.
Not much was thought of the car or Ma Mopar's desire to have S&M race in a S/S class with one. This was not high on S&M’s to do list.
Believe it or not the car did see a good deal of work in the field. It was not as a race car. The Super Bird was relegated to air port duty. It was often left at the airport with its key under the mat as a means of transportation for visitors to the S&M shop.
I don't know when or where it first left S&M and changed hands. What I do remember being told is for a short time in the mid 70’s it was in the hands of someone who owned a drag strip. The next reference in my notes has it without the nose and tail when it was sold to a racer in the Louisiana boonies. At the HRR in Columbus I spoke with a Louisiana guy who races fuel Harleys and is a friend of my partner John. That’s when I was told by him that for a very short time it was used as a bracket car. Then due to an engine failure was parked out behind the garage. At this point it met the same fate as many other cars with owner had good intentions of one day. Translation: it just it began to rust away.
About a week after the HRR Duke called me from home back down in Louisiana. Since nearly 20 years had passed since he had last seen and talked to anyone regarding the Superbird he had made some visits and calls to check the stories details with some others.
Apparently it to them it was not as significant a car as it would have been to us. No one recalled anything new to add other than the entire Parrish was flooded and a good deal of it washed away. THANKS TO KATRINA

Wow! Thanks for all of the gouge HemiFred . Who woulda thought airport duty? I always figured they got rid of it because it didn't perform the way they expected...in the end the Cuda and Duster were the hot ticket.

Guess the "mystery" surrounding it is having more of an impact than the car ever did.

Anybody know when or where this pic of Jake King was taken? Notice the Bird over his shoulder? Could this have been the S&M bird before paint? It is awfully close to the S&M rig.
