What type of idle quality should i expect from a 230/38,530ish lift cam in a low comp 440?i get a bunch of engine movement(rubber mounts)same results from both my Holley 750 mech dp and an edelbrock 600...am i chasing my tail trying to get this to smooth out? or is this expected?

carb is not going to smooth out the idle...

you are going to get a lumpy idle because of the duration of the cam...

best thing is to make sure your timing is correct...and re-curve the distributo to bring in the advance faster..

More initial advance will help it.

Asumeing you have a low compression motor as in 8 to one or so then bumping it up to around 10 to one would help smooth it out. Advancing the idle timing to 18* or so should help it how it is but it is never gonna be smooth. Mabey some poly motor mounts will keep the engine from shakeing so much but will instead shake the car more. A 4 corner idle circuit carb should in theory help but never worked for me. Last thing I can think of is to turn the idle up to around 1000 RPM, mabey more if you can stand it.

i have a 440 with an engle k65 solid, 238@.050-.510 lift, 9.3:1 compression and its smoother than a babys butt. check your ignition wires, look for dirt in the carb, intake leaks, etc., and re-curve the distributor.

A solid will idle better than a same size hydro because the valve is not opening during part of the duration while the lash is being taken up. Also he has a few degrees more over lap if your cam and his have to same LSA. I don't see either one of the LSAs mentioned.

Thanks for the reply's,I have the Holley 750 with 4 corner idle...i will dial that in, get what i can out of it,wires are new, but i will look into the distributor...I am fine with the idle/shake as long as i know its only a result of the cam, everything else being as it should...Anybody suggest baseline jetting w/older Holley 750 hp carb?

If the initial timing isn't optimized, you'll chase your tail.

Timing first then worry about carb settings.

another thing to look at is lifter preload. too much will cause the engine to idle rough. the lsa on the cam i mentioned is 111 degrees. it has 292 degrees of seat timing, 148@.200 at the lobe, 152@.200 at the valve. a solid tappet will idle better than an hydraulic. but, this engine combo does not lope, just a moderate rumble typical of lower compression engines. i did a bunch of tuning, built mucho distributors until i was happy. there is no jumping around in the engine bay.

It's an older grind,i don't think they offer it anymore...Although i think maybe Engle does as they ground for Hughes during that period.
