Not sure how far this town is but the length of the trip is not a good test for a fan on situation.

It's usually more of how long you've stopped driving for.
During the trip, fans will not run because air flowing through the grille at speed will keep the radiator cool and your thermostat will regulate.

When you stop driving, or drive slow. Without the airflow through the grill. The thermostat will eventually go wide open. Next the temperature will rise and finally the fan will run to pull the temperature back down to almost thermostat temp.

If you have ac, cycle it. This will force the fan to run, regardless of engine temperature.
If not, after a drive, let it idle. Depending on the weather, most cars will require fan after a 2 or 3 minutes.
