it is a brand new engine bought in 2007 from Jegs. It looks to be stored in a clean garage and looks to have been oiled. With all I have read about 472 I am thinking I will have to tear it down anyway. All thoughts are appreciated...

It's a Cummins recon , you will have to have the heads redone , guides are too tight , valve springs are bigger than locating step on the head and the locating lands on the retainers , I wwas able to move the spring around by hand with the valveclosed. They put a big blob of RED RTV around the big water ports on the head gaskets I had RTV inside at least 2 cylinders , the #1 exh pushrod was rubbing the head gasket , the #1 exhaust lifter didn't rotate very well when spinning the engine over by hand ... that's just off the top of my head. I have a friend that bought a 472 of that vintage , he had similar findings.
