472 Crate Hemi... What should I lookout for? - 03/09/11 08:52 PM

I have a beat on a 472 crate hemi that has been sitting for about 3 years. It is new and has never been installed in a car. I have read about problems with these engines. What should I look for? The tough question.. What should I expect to pay for this? It's a completr engine from intake to pan...

If it's a Cummins recon engine and it's cheap buy it , if it's not cheap do not waste your money because you'll need to COMPLETELY disassemble it and go thru everything , also note it has NO WARRANTY , that expired 90 days after it was purchased.

I have an 05ish vintage 426 and it's APART so I know what I am talking about .

Depends on where it was sitting...in some guy's leaky garage? Then no warranty.

However if it's one of the four ACs left in Chrysler dealer inventory, MP will have to provide a normal 90 day 'parts only' warranty to the original purchaser, starting from the day the purchaser picks up the engine from the dealer, as stated in writing. If it is one of those, document the sale carefully and avoid ebay if at all possible.

it is a brand new engine bought in 2007 from Jegs. It looks to be stored in a clean garage and looks to have been oiled. With all I have read about 472 I am thinking I will have to tear it down anyway. All thoughts are appreciated...

It's a Cummins recon , you will have to have the heads redone , guides are too tight , valve springs are bigger than locating step on the head and the locating lands on the retainers , I wwas able to move the spring around by hand with the valveclosed. They put a big blob of RED RTV around the big water ports on the head gaskets I had RTV inside at least 2 cylinders , the #1 exh pushrod was rubbing the head gasket , the #1 exhaust lifter didn't rotate very well when spinning the engine over by hand ... that's just off the top of my head. I have a friend that bought a 472 of that vintage , he had similar findings.

I'm not sure on this, but I think starting in 2008 the Mopar Performance crate engines were made from brand new tooling and assembled by Ray Barton Racing and Gary Stanton Racing. Ray assembles the 528's and Gary assembles the 472's and 426's. I assume that the 2007 and earlier engines are the one's with known problems.
To see if it is made from the new tooling, check the front of the block for a frost plug on each side of the water pump. The older engines did not have frost plugs on the front.
