Back in the 90's when I bought my first new 1406, I called tech support who told me that these carbs NEED a 4 hole spacer under them to flow properly. Sure enough, I tried one and eliminated almost all issues, the rest were worked out with proper tuning. Why they simply don't say that in the owner's manual is a mystery...

The thickness of the spacer matters, too. It depends on your engine build and health. The 360 in my W150 needed 1.25". The poly 318 in my 64 Fury needed 1/2". The 440 in the Charger was 1". Just food for thought.
