You need to separate the wiring into major areas. The other handy plug you can disconnect is the harness plug in the left kick panel, right before the rear harness goes under the doorsill.
Another "quickie" is to disconnect the brake light switch right at the switch.
As someone else said, you need to get a good diagram. There are all kinds of tricks in this circuit, like feeding the ign switch key buzzer, if you have a map light or console, some of the dome light stuff goes there.
"Check your grounds." No, sorry, NOT a ground problem. This is a short somewhere.
