Dirt and crap will build up over time in the rad/transmission cooler fins. I'd spend alot of time and water washing and blowing out all the fins from both sides. Run the water until it turns clear.

There is a check-ball also that is known to stick and block flow to the cooler. You could try having a look at that next.

Your truck did exactly what it is supposed to do if the transmission is getting too hot, it's in the owner's manual. Be thankful it's set-up to protect itself from melting. Don't give up on it.
