However, I think the old rule of thumb was to fill the rear end so when you place your finger into the fill hole and bend it at the first knuckle you should just be touching the lubricant. I know that's what I do.

WOW! I filled my 8.75 up and it took almost 2 1/2 quarts! If you use friction modifier add it first then add the lube until it begins to come out of the fill hole on the side. Easy.
