The point where it gets hard to crank is when the cables are pulling the rear of the panel up over those humps on the cable covers. There's no adjustment to be made.
It is normal to encounter some resistance at that point but not to the point where it feels like something is going to give way.
The ends of the cables have little ramps that lift the rear of the panel to go flush with the roof. They are made of pot metal and easily broken.
The only thing I can suggest is to make sure everything in that area is clean and lubed with fresh grease, and that the panel lifts aren't broken.
