If the alternator is not recieving voltage from the battery it cannot make voltage, alternators do not make amperage or voltge, they can only increase it It sounds like you have the alternator hooked up correctly so the motor dies when the cut off switch or one of the battery cables is disconnected you need to buy, borrow or swipe a volt meter and check the battery voltage before and after starting and keeping the motor running. You might want to use a volt meter in the car also to make sure that the charging system is working, make sure the volt meter is not active with the ignition run switch(toggle) in the off position
