I agree with the others on the vacuum advance. Set timing without it, but still use it even if you adjust it so it doesn't contribute much

Personally, I think your idle problem is the carbs being too lean at idle...mine did what you describe...took a lot of playing around to get it. A vacuum gage absolutely helps to do it.
