You are required to have the transponder on when flying in controlled airspace. The only time we turned off the transponder was in combat. For the none aviation guys the transponder emits a radio single that allows air traffic control to track the aircraft.

The news said the transponder was off or malfunctioning, who knows why he ejected, could it be total lack of electrical power? shruggy
