Sorry till year about your wife, hopefully she gets taken care of. My dad had kidney failure, dialisys was working for him so they told us don't even consider donating. They said a donor would come up. they were unable to do transplant on him so he was on dialisys for 10 years or so. His friend had a transplant, but he didn't always take the meds for whatever reason. My did would always be giving him a hard time, telling him how lucky he was, don't mess it up. My friends wife was type 1 diabetic from a little girl, she had k+p transplant like 20 years ago and I think she's just starting to have some issues. They told me if you truly can't afford the meds, you can get help, that those transplant programs don't want failures, they want as many successful patients as possible on the record to keep the program going.
