The lube is like Master said, for the threads. On a flared fitting the threads are only there to push on the flare on the tube to the cone on the fitting.
It could also be a bad surface on the flared end. Polish the flare on the open end. Mark it with a Sharpie and dry assemble. The ink should transfer to the cone all the way around.
