If the car still has a fender tag, broadcast sheet or original Monroney label/ window sticker I think all of those have that (sales order?) number? Again that's how the '68 B-bodies were done.

Yes,it is the sales order number.
I have a C body and the trunk lip number matches the sales order number on the broadcast sheet and fender tag.
This can be confusing especially to not well informed Customs Officials when a 68-older car is crossing the US/Canadian border,for example.
