1968 Dodge Polara vin locations?

1968 Dodge Polara vin locations? - 03/18/18 03:24 PM

I'm going to have to get government inspection for titling. They're going to want to see multiple spots for verification. My collection is almost all 57-61 mopars, I'm ignorant on these cars. Where can I start looking for these other spots? Appreciate the help.

Thanks!

I only know '68 B-body cars and only know that the last numbers stamped on the radiator support and the trunk drip rail were NOT the last numbers of the VIN but the numbers from the lower right of the FENDER TAG. If the car still has a fender tag, broadcast sheet or original Monroney label/ window sticker I think all of those have that (sales order?) number? Again that's how the '68 B-bodies were done.

Yes,it is the sales order number.
I have a C body and the trunk lip number matches the sales order number on the broadcast sheet and fender tag.
This can be confusing especially to not well informed Customs Officials when a 68-older car is crossing the US/Canadian border, for example.

As mentioned, there are no VIN numbers on 68 engines and transmissions.
However, you can verify if the drivetrain is original to the car by checking the 14 digit serial numbers stamped on the cylinder block pan rail at the left rear corner below starter opening if it is a B/RB engine.
Typically should be within three months or less of the shipping order number.
Trans has a PK number on the left side oil pan rail.
If you have access to a 68 FSM,it can help decifer the numbers.
Hope this helps

Yes there are vin numbers on 68 drivetrains just not stamped in the typical 69 later locations. It is on top next to oil sender. I have heard earlier 68 cars did not have these stamping but not sure if that’s a myth. Here’s my 69 Polara numbers match drivetrain

As talked about above the VIN will not be stamped on the body (that started in 69) but the VON or shipping order numbers are stamped on the cowl by the hood seal and I’m almost certain in the trunk pan as well but I didn’t want to disturb my weather stripping to get a picture, very original car and all LOL But here is a cowl pic and as you can see it matches the fender tag bottom right numbers.
1st digit is assembly plant
2nd digit is year
3rd digit is 1st vin digit or model
Last six digits - Shipping Order Number

Not a myth...a fact!
My 68 Newport Custom was an early build (September '67) and its 383 does not have the VIN stamped.
My 68 NY'er was built February 68 and its 440 DID have the VIN stamped by the oil sender.
