For topping off tires, I use the Harbor Freight model that is sometimes on sale for $39.99. As much as I use it, there's no need for anything better. If it breaks, recycle it and buy a new one. It is, however, noisy as heck.

I also have a ProPower compressor that is oil lubed, another cheap Chinese compressor that I bought at Pep Boys. It worked great until I broke the pressure switch.

The OP is not looking for a shop compressor. Portable means easy to move around. Nail gun compressors are by nature portable.
