I used the intermediate shaft trick to align the od sprag hub and planetary, too. I used a piece of tubing over the intermediate shaft in the press to compress the return spring and install the clutch pack. I'm not and expert, but I've rebuilt my share of transmissions. The 518 internals are very similar to the 727 and I haven't found it much more difficult to work on.
