I don't see a way to do it with a base-clear system unless a flattening agent is added to the clear. If you add unaltered clear coat over something that's supposed to be a matte finish it's going to look way too glossy guaranteed. I don't know of anybody who has tried this, but one could certainly get together with an expert painter or paint supplier and start playing around with it. I think I would prefer to have a single stage paint myself.

The PPG DCC 9355 is a single stage urethane and probably the most durable of the choices available. That is what will likely end up on my dart hood unless something better appears between now and then.
