What has happened, and what you are doing by touching the disconnected positive cable to ground is clearing all the adaptive memory from the controller. GJ you are partially correct but....when you install a NEW battery (replacing dead/missing or shorted battery) and do not reset the idle strategy properly, you most likely will have warm idle issues. The PCM has a small capacitor/battery to keep such memory alive for short durations, hence the reason you need to short the terminals to exhaust the PCM capacitor/battery.
