.do i need the distributor/oil pump drive shaft in the engine to get the correct cam end play?i forgot to mention this is a big block.

if you want to know what the running end play is the you must use the oil pump drive gear in the motor. How are you measuring the end play now?I like to measure off of the back of the cam before I install the rear cam plug
