The Last of The dumb Roller Cam question's (i hope) - 12/29/08 04:13 PM

how do you get the proper clearance setting on the cam play(front to back).i have a cam button and i know that will keep the cam from walking out,and i can adjust that clearance buy dinging the timing cover.but i can push my cam back pretty far, to the point where the chain is misalingned a little bit(yes this is a new timing set).what keeps the cam from walking back?do i need the cam plug pushed in more?am i missing something here?thanks again for your help.

I am using a timing chain with a Torrington bearing on the back side of the cam gear. Several companies sell them now.

The cam timming chain sprocket stops the reward movement. Timming chain should be correctly aligned when the cam is pushed back to where the strocket contacts the front of the block.
Is the crank sprocket push all the way back onto the crank?

yes i have the crank sprocket all the way back on the crank.do i need the distributor/oil pump drive shaft in the engine to get the correct cam end play?i forgot to mention this is a big block.

if you want to know what the running end play is the you must use the oil pump drive gear in the motor. How are you measuring the end play now?I like to measure off of the back of the cam before I install the rear cam plug

well i was going to set the play at zero with out the timing cover gasket.(my gasket is .010 thick not compressed)then install the cover with gasket........sounds like i should knock out the rear cam plug to get a better reading.thank you for the info.

If you have the right magnetic dial indicator holder and extensions for the dial indicator stem you can sometimes take the reading off of the backside of the timing gear thru the slot in the block behind the timing gear, if you don't want to knock the cam plug out. Lots of ways to get the job done, if you have the right tool selection needed to get it done that way

If you're using a stock cover you can use a spare cover with a hole in it for the dial indicator. This picture is of an aftermarket cover but it is the same basic idea.

Setting endplay is one of the nice features about the Jesel belt drive. The endplay is set with washers and it is very easy to measure.

Quick question? won't the pressure on the oil pump drive help maintain rearward thrust on the cam?
