because if you just took the wire from the normal yellow start wire terminal on the starter relay from the ign switch the car would crank when the key was turned to the run posistion.

I was thinking that awhile back one of our left coast buddies (Frankenduster?) had a problem with that as it started to engage the starter solenoid part time when the charging voltage got high enough. wierded him out for awhile till he caught on to what was going on

Yea I have seen people try that as its easy to forget if you try to bypass the ballast right from the yellow start wire to the starter relay thats the crank wire from the ign switch well when the key is turned on the voltage from through the ballast will go to the yellow wire and pull the starter relay in and engage it as the 7 or so volts can be enough to do that. The ballast has to be bypassed by a seperate terminal in the crank posistion so the key on volts cant get to the start circuit at key on. Ron
