need electronic ignition wiring diagram - 01/01/15 02:41 AM

Tried to find it in the tech section but can't find it. Could someone put me in the right direction..Thanks. And have a great new year. Mike

Mike the yellow wire in the pic is an error. The "ST" terminal on the ign sw runs out to the "IGN" terminal on the starter relay and is a yellow wire at that point at the SR. Do not run or T that yellow wire to the ballast. The brown wire (ign2) is supposed to be connected to the ballast downstream end (where the yellow wire is now) & the brown wire jumps right over to the coil positive primary (bypassing the ballast)

No matter what the source, the yellow wire is an error. Ballast resister bypass is provided by the IGN2 circuit (usually a brown wire) not the starter relay.

Never noticed the way it's worded. I've always used the existing wires at the old resistor.

That diagram was originally made for M bodies and the starter relay they have does have a ballast resistor spot.

Alright, That explains where that come from

Pickups had the start bypass from the relay too.

Kind of a hijack but, when removing a lean burn system, does the coil need changed as well? Going through a 85 Ramcharger for the kid that came to us with a Weiand intake and Eddy carb (as well as a blown trans due to no throttle valve linkage and a burned wiring harness from fuel leaks) I've got the wiring redone (removed the puter and added the old style module and ballast) The engine will start with the ballast installed but dies after cranking. Bypassing the ballast will keep it running. I have a 1/2 ohm and a 1.5 ohm ballast and neither makes the truck happy.

I noted the puter didn't use a ballast and am wondering if the coil is a high resistance one to work with the puter and I need a lower resisyance one to work with the ign module?

Are there 2 coils? Anyone know the resistance specs? Ballast resistance would help yoo.

Andy welcome aboard . Yes you want a close to correct match/choice on the coil/ballast combo but that ain't whats keepin it from running in ign1 when you let off the key (longevity can be affected with the wrong choice but it will start if wired right/hard components are functioning). Are you sayin bypassing the ballast will let it run and both of the ballasts (.5/1.5 ohm) have continuity but neither will let it continue to run in ign1? Sumpin ain't makin sense. I'd confirm that you have fire at the coil positive primary/ECU (blue/yellow) in ign1. What ECU did you use.

Basic4 pin ecu wired per diagram. Truck cranks and fires just fine but will die when letting off the key. Typically symptoms of urnt ballast or loss of run power but... The ballast is not open ckt and bypassing the ballast keeps it running.
I'm thinking the coil is some sort of high resistance unit for ignition system that don't use a ballast. Considering the other hacks on this truck it wouldn't surprise me.
So I'm looking for specs to confirm.

Ohm the coil (pri/sec) when you can & post em. HF has a VOM for $10

Thats right as its normally the ign 2 terminal off the ign switch that bypasses the ballast while cranking. But I dont remember what year I believe around 1980 or about where Mopar started putting a seperate terminal on the starter relay that bypasses the ballast while cranking and the ign switch did not do it on them models. They had to use a seperate terminal they added to the starter relay to get power while cranking to do it because if you just took the wire from the normal yellow start wire terminal on the starter relay from the ign switch the car would crank when the key was turned to the run posistion as thats why they had to add a seperate terminal. I was thinking that awhile back one of our left coast buddies (Frankenduster?) had a problem with that as it started to engage the starter solenoid part time when the charging voltage got high enough. wierded him out for awhile till he caught on to what was going on

Yea I have seen people try that as its easy to forget if you try to bypass the ballast right from the yellow start wire to the starter relay thats the crank wire from the ign switch well when the key is turned on the voltage from through the ballast will go to the yellow wire and pull the starter relay in and engage it as the 7 or so volts can be enough to do that. The ballast has to be bypassed by a seperate terminal in the crank posistion so the key on volts cant get to the start circuit at key on. Ron
