The blue wire on the voltage regulator is lots closer to the carb than the fuse box. The amp draw from the choke is minimal, won't affect the ignition operation.
When I tried this on my truck it would over charge slightly. From 14.5 to about 15.5v at fast idle at the battery. When I removed the wire from the choke the voltage came back down. 
I didn't see a voltage increase. Mine stayed about the same.
