12V Source for Electric Choke Hookup?

12V Source for Electric Choke Hookup? - 11/12/14 01:03 AM

Just put an electric choke on my 850 Holley. Were is the best place to tap in to get my ignitioned 12V source? I've done this in the past but just can't recall where I ended up getting that from in the engine compartment.

Thanks.

I dropped a short line down several inches to the blue wire switched 12V alt field wire in the loom along side the inside of the pass valve cover. people have said to tap back at the fuse block to avoid a voltage drop to the coil from tapping into the blue alt/ballast/ecu wire but with good connections/minimal voltage drops I think it is a non issue in that any draw in the system is going to lower the voltage no matter where it tapps into the system at. Unrelated, it made the elec choke on my eddy 1406 come off WAY to quick in cold weather. The car (65 dart 318) got totalled before I could figure out a solution

Sounds like a place to start with. Sounds like the spot I had done before. I know I didn't go far but did stay away from the coil as suggested in the instructions.

EZ use a dual tab connector on the input side of the ballast resistor.. Available from Napa, AutoZone..
See the pix..

Just my $0.02...

In order to minimize any additional load on the ignition circuit, I always use a relay. I bolt it to the rear mounting bolt on the carb. Pick up the power from the alternator stud and trigger it with the blue wire.

I use the keyed accessory port on the fusebox. Simple and easy.

The blue wire on the voltage regulator is lots closer to the carb than the fuse box. The amp draw from the choke is minimal, won't affect the ignition operation.

If the car originally had an electric choke assist, there should already be a blue power wire right at the choke in the wiring harness.

I pulled it off the coil

Worst choice possible. The coil doesn't get 12volts, except during cranking.

That's my plan. Thanks.

I should have specified but it's on my 69 R/T. Originally non electric.

When I tried this on my truck it would over charge slightly. From 14.5 to about 15.5v at fast idle at the battery. When I removed the wire from the choke the voltage came back down.

That ain't good at all. Where exactly where you tapped in at?

I'll check that out and see if I got a rise in voltage. Wouldn't think I would but I'll check it out. I hooked it to the blue wire at the ballast that goes to the regulator. Everything seems to work fine. Car runs no different and I didn't notice any kind of jump on my ammeter gage.

Mine also seems to pull off too quickly on this Holley. I need to figure that situation out. Everything else seems to be fine.

I did correct that situation of pulling off too soon. The horn plate rod needed a slight bend in it so when the choke was fully engaged when cold the plate would not shut completely. Unlike the old style carbs, there is no choke pull off to this that will pull that horn plate back about 1/4 inch to allow some air in. In this situation, you can manually wind the choke coil much further counterclockwise to truly make that adjustment of how soon it pulls the choke off. Works great now.

Re: 12V Source for Electric Choke Hookup? - 11/15/14 05:20 PM

yes there is no "choke pulloff" unless the piston inside there performs that function which is what I thought it did & that I was missing something cuz it came off too quick plus no pulloff function. Are you sayin you cranked the choke way rich to in effect make it come off slower but clarify how you then got the 1/4" gap opening that a regular choke is supposed to provide when it starts. Even with bending the rod if it's cranked way rich it would be closed & stay that way when it starts. What am I missing bro

From the Edelbrock website:
How do I hook up my electric choke (voltage)?
The Electric choke on our Performer Series and AVS carburetors needs to be hooked to a "keyed" (while the key is in the on position) 12-volt power source, with a good ground. Verify there is no voltage when the key is in the off position. Do not connect the positive wire to the Ignition Coil, ballast resistor or Alternator.

I got the 1/4" gap by turning the coil more rich which also brought the fast idle paw all the way on. Then I pulled the throttle back on the carb to completely close the plate, as you mentioned. I then bent the plate rod until I got the 1/4" or so gap. When cold, it will only close the 1/4" with the choke set. At that point it made the car easy to start and drive as it is warming up.

The piston inside the choke housing does act as the pulloff and pulling off too quickly can be cured by simply turning the plastic outer housing toward the "RICH" direction (tightens the internal spring). The tighter the internal spring, the longer it takes the butterfly to fully open.

The loose fit of the pulloff piston in its bore also causes a slight vacuum leak which pulls fresh air into the choke housing to prevent overheating.

John you are the man & when I get that 1406 on another running vehicle I will do just that. I will crank it rich(er) & find/solve why the piston ain't giving me the choke pulloff.

I didn't see a voltage increase. Mine stayed about the same.
