A furniture dolly works okay to store an old passenger car engine on. Just use some vertical 2x6 on each side of the oil pan and the engine will sit there. But most guys with $20k race engines want something a little nicer. Especially if you have an aluminum oil pan, or a custom oiling system.
The dollies that I used to build had 5 inch casters on them. The casters alone cost more than double what a furniture dolly costs.
