It doesn't come down to just the compression ratio, it's the complete engine design. I've seen aluminum headed engines that detonate on 94 with 11:1 compression. On the other hand, the Aspen in my signature is 13.3:1 with a cast iron head on it, and it runs 94 all day long with a meth kit for good measure.
