And because of that I always believed the stainless steel, being harder than tin, would probably do more damage to an aluminum head, and that's why I never used it.

I think it's the wire o-ring, rather than the stainless steel "wrapper", that's leaving the indentations... I believe the DG gaskets I used to run also had stainless fire rings w/o any wire insert and they never left a mark on my Stage VIs after multiple uses.
