I just repaired mine. PO took an original manual shaft and compressed it to use on a power gearbox. I put the shaft back to the original length, drilled through the holes in the outer shaft and used nylon screws I but from Valu to keep the shaft in the correct position. the nylon screws perform the same function as the original plastic/nylon material the factory used, the nylon will break in an accident and allow the shaft to compress. the nylon bolts cost me 30 cents each. in the attached pic you can see both the inner and outer shaft. The white marks on the inner are plastic and line up with the holes on the outer shaft. I have more pics if you need any. Shaft is from a 70 superbee manual shift car so should be the same as yours.
