I did that for a friend of mine back in 2004 when he built his roller cam, Indy headed, big block. It works fine, but any off the self button needs more taken off when it is welded to the inside. But it looks nicer that way after the motor is put together. We used a dial indicator on the cam during assembly to set the end play. I forget the number, but it was pretty tight since the cover will still flex some.
