2. The motor is a 1969 340 and has the timing marks cast into the cover on the passenger side behind the watter pump inlet, so you cant see them. To add to the problem the balancer is an aftermarket piece and so the timing marks are 90deg off. I cannot seem to get this timing right. Comp said that the initial timing is 12-14 deg total timing is 36-38 and they want it all in before 3000. So according to MSD they said to use the silver bushing (25 Deg) and by their timing graph (E) I should use one light silver spring and one light blue spring and this is what I have done. I can get it sounding right in the shop but when I test drive it the timing sounds way off when the motor is under a load.

Replace the timing cover with the CORRECT later model part . or get the engine to TDC and create timing marks where they can be seen if you don't want to do what you should have done initially .






or get the correct wp/damper/rad to go with the t-cover you have.

use a vac gauge on the full vac port of the carb,advance timeing till you get your highest vac reading,adjust idle air screws to get highest vac reading playing with it till you get the highest vac reading

then back it off one full # and lock the dist down (example..if highest is 19..back it down to 18)

this will get you real close and in the ball park for timeing with out a time light

then get a light on it and make note of where its at for future referance.

you can now use that as a base line,then test drive and adjust more if needed with a light and the vac gauge together to fine turn timeing and the carb setting.
