Some insurance companies, like Allstate, offer discounted rates to those who allow monitoring their driving habits through access to their phones. The day will come, with all insurance companies, when you won't get a discount for allowing monitoring, you will be required to pay a premium if you don't allow monitoring.

I think that's entirely possible.

Next, everyone pays a premium to fund the compulsory monitoring.

Isn't that basically the same thing?

Part of the reason I got out of my 2018 ford and back into a 98 Dodge, too much technology that isn't for my own good, I'm trying to get the wife into something older now too.

I know I'm being tracked thru my phone but I'm looking into one of those bags that will block the signal reaching the phone , I survived for decades without one so no big deal .

Its all those "convenient" things that are mostly what is tracking you on your phone.
Things like the weather app, map directions, instant answers to questions, the latest stock market news, the latest sports news, those money saving coupons at your finger tips, anything you just have to have because you might get or win something, or you have just because it sounded good, or might have something that interests you and was free. That would be on top of the 20 or so things your phone has automatically added just for the privilege's of carrying it around (and of course for your "safety", or any web site you looked at on your phone.

Most people are so addicted to the instant information, they couldn't live with out it. There are phones out there that do not have many tracking apps, but most people would just add all their "needed" apps as soon as they got one of those non-tracking phones in their hands.

I have a flip phone without an internet connection, and most of the time, it is sitting on the kitchen table. My truck has 96 technology, so unless my wife is riding along with her loaded phone, I'm pretty hard to track, I think. When this thing dies, I'm going for one of those low tracking phones.

I've wondered about this, it's not tied to car, but your phone app.
So if you're a passenger with someone who's a crappy driver, I guess you get dinged too?

And what about the people that carpool, they think you've driven 2x what you really have?

I think my parents had Allstate for a time and they had a dongle that plugged into their ODBII port that was monitoring the car and sending back info , my dad would occasionally get a letter from them stating he was driving too fast .
