A friend just picked up a nice 9800s thermo-quad at a swap meet. GG's white book lists a 9801s but not not a 9800s. The carb is missing the choke parts, but like they were never there as opposed to be stripped off. Does anyone have any info on this carb? Year, application, etc? I'm guessing it is an aftermarket performance carb.
TIA
Arno

It is an aftermarket thermoquad made for GM linkage and it originaly had a choke.

The 9800 GM style should be an aftermarket Super Quad carb 800cfm originally with an electric choke I believe.

I picked up a nice 1000cfm Super carb race version at a swap meet years ago for $50 and sold it on Ebaymotors for $300.

The one you sold on ebay is an ENTIRELY different animal than a Super-Quad.

Yours was a (4847s or 4847SA depending on the year 1969 or 1970) actually called Competition Series Thermo-Quad (not a "Super carb"), the Competition Series 4747 and 4846 (850cfm versions) were true race carbs with a manual choke and an air bleed idle mixture system vs solid fuel metering system as all other Thermo-Quads used with the sole exception of the 1971 production line 4972s and 4973s 340 Thermo-Quads.

Pic is a Competition Series Thermo-Quad, the flat bosses on the fuel bowls with the foil decal make them easy to spot.

Pic of an NOS original "Super-Quad". Don't let the "Racey" looking box fool you, a "Super-Quad" was just a "Super" one size fits all replacement carb with the convenience of an electric choke added, nothing more, nothing less.

Thought I'd revive this

Are there many of the 1000CFM T-quads out there. Nick has an NOS

I have a whole bunch of the 9800s and a single SuperCompetition one (never used that one though)....

The 9800s though are slightly different carbs...not to say "better" then stock TQs, just that they have circuits that would make them more suitable for performance installations.

This is a Competition Series Thermo-Quad. These are easy to recognize due to the unique foil decals on the top of each fuel bowl.

They made two sizes of two versions, an 850cfm (4846S) and 1000cfm (4847S), version one was introduced in 1969 (the very first Thermo-Quads ever BTW) which used press in jets that had O-Ring seals. The second introduced in 1970, used a more traditional screw in style jets. The 1969 versions had a metal tag to identify them and the feet were not stamped with numbers. The 1970 and later screw in jet versions had no I.D. tags and had the part# stampings on the face of the drivers side rear mounting foot. These had an "A" added to the part# 4846SA/4847SA.

*Jetting is very unique to these. None of the jets in either design interchange with other Thermo-Quad carburetors. These are an air metered design, all other Thermo-Quads with the exception of 1971 340 Themo-Quads (4972/4973) are the solid/fuel metered design. The 4972/4973 340 carbs also use their own jets. The only jets made for tuning any of these carbs were offered in Carter Strip kits unique to each design. These kits are exceptionally rare these days.

This is a "Superquad"

These were a late 1970's introduction offered as a "One size fits all" replacement part for cars equipped with a Thermo-Quad or other spread bore carb design. They were an 800cfm carb and were not designed as a performance upgrade. They all had an electric choke which makes them pretty easy to spot without checking the list number. Good carbs with nothing really special about them other than that.

*There is no such thing as a "Super Competition Series" Thermo-Quad

I had one on my 71 Charger. Jim tricked it up a bit. Really responsive carb.
