There were two drive gear bushings included in this Mopar BB tear down kit, one is a heavier bronze(?) and the other a lighter aluminum(?) - wondering which one is correct for stock 1968-71 B/RB applications? Is the bronze bushing used for upgrading to the hardened dist. drive gear for hardended cam gears? TIA.

All teh factory bushings I've seen were bronze.

More folks will chime in - be aware, there's a HUGE controversy of whether you need to use the special burnishing tool to properly install that bushing.

I replaced an aluminium bushing in a 68 block with a bronze bushing. I assumed they were aluminium from the factory but maybe it had been replaced some time in the past.

Some later blocks had a bushing that resembles aluminum, dissolves quickly when the block is hot-tanked.

If you decide not to use the correct burnishing tool, check the fit of the intermediate shaft before assembling the motor.

I have not seen a new alum(silver) one, but have seen some on blocks taken apart. (they were usually spinning in block- not good. I would also use the bronze unit, and they do sometimes (not always) fit shaft tight if you do not ream.

As stated above, to install it the correct way you do need the correct burnishing tool....IMHO

Thank you Fury Fan - good read for sure, as an update, on Bill Rolik's Mopar parts web site he's listed bronze/oilite drive gear bushings as an updated/improved part that allows for better oiling to happen, states the aluminum bushings are stock...

In the pic below the bushing on the right was removed from an original '73 400, the one on the left is the typical bronze bushing. The bronze bushing weighs 24 grams, the one on the right weighs 9 grams so I think it's safe to assume that the lighter one is aluminum.

How important are the oil groves. The new bushing in my block has none.

Since I had a "near miss" on a bushing installed without the tool I will always use the bronze bushing and install with the busnishing tool. Last time I was able to borrow one from a Dodge dealer... next time I'll try to borrow agan and buy one if necessary.
