Sorry to hijack guys. But has anyone made my mistake. I started building a new rearend for the racecar and started with a Dana 70 by accident. I narrowed it and was about to weld everything up when I had a gut feeling that this housing looked too beefy. In researching it it is indeed a 70 housing. Now i have all the axles spool and guts from my previous 60 and was goind to reuse them. I realize the ring is bigger on the 70 and thus the larger housing but can the 60 parts be used in the 70 rather than me start all over again. I feel stupid but the housings are real close in appearance so I can't be the only guy to make this mistake. i have not measured anything to see if it will work as I just noticed it. Are the pinion bearings and side bearing sizes different. Obviously I can make the housing ends whatever I want but I think I am scrooood as I think I read somewhere the bearing sizes are different as well. Anyone know for sure----thanks

Greg

The carrier bearings in my 92 CTD dana 70 were the same part# as my dana 60 in the racecar. I can't remember on the pinion bearings. Beep

Ok, I called about getting my housing narrowed and new ends put on. Including shafts and the ends it was 700.00. There is a 3 week lead time and the shipping quote I got was 115.00 each way. So now I need to get the 70 ring and pinion fit. I was also able to find an original dana 70 power lok for 150.00 used. Do these prices seem ok? Tim

Who is doing the work for you?

I was talking to Dutchman, in Portland. I will install and clearance the gears but needed to get the housing narrowed and converted from a full floater truck axle. Tim

Sutton Engineering in SoCal is good for this kind of work.

Sutton Engineering

Advanced 4x4 in SLC also does this kind of work.

I would use Loctite 39150 Loctite Bearing Mount Sticks. on the bearing race.

Because you have less interference fit on the races and they mite spin. The 4x4 guys do not spinning the pinion as fast as a drag car. Better safe than sorry.

As long as the shafts are the right length, they will work. Both D60 and D70 came with 35 spline (except for M715 front axle and 3/4 ton rear axles, 30 spline) Dana 70's have a 3.5" axle tube and are very very very heavy. If you weld on conventional housing ends you are good to go. If it is a truck, D70 and D60 use the same spindles

Once I get a ring and pinion from a Dana 70, get everything clearanced, then I need to decide whether I need to stay local or pay the shipping for another vendor to narrow the housing and get shafts. This way if I screw up clearancing, I am only out the 50.00 for the truck housing I already bought. Either way I am looking at a total of about 1100-1200 if I can come up with a used Power lok, ring and pinion. There are several Dana 70s avaiable locally. Tim
