Looking to put some 15" reproduction rallye wheels on my Cuda.

Plan on using 235/60/15 on front

255/60/15 on rear

I understand that I can put the 255s on a 15 x 7 inch wheel but was talking to a guy that recommended going up to a 15 x 8 wheel instead. Does this really change the appearance of the tire? More of a straight vs. bulged out sidewall??

Anybody have pics of one versus the other?

Thanks

I have had the 255 on 7" and 8". The 8" will look better and wear better. You can run 33lb of air.

Now you will have some answers that say ? "i run 275's on 7" rims -- no problems" :shock

Goodrich has a rim width range of 7" to 9" for a 255/60-15 tire. So either rim width is acceptable.

I have 255/60-15's on the back of my 68 Barracuda on 8" wide Rally wheels. I am happy with the look and performance. Sorry no picts from the back.

NOTE: there is no proper trim ring for the 8" wide rally wheels. I purchased generic 8" trim rings from wheel Vintiques and they won't even go onto their 8" wide wheel. I called and they said the only trim ring that will fit is the same one that goes on the 7" wide wheel. There is a gap between the edge of the ring and the center of the wheel. Its not really noticeable until you look at the 7" wide wheels I have on the front.

Can you elaborate on that??? I'll probably need side by side pis to understand the looking better part. Why would the tire wear better on the 8" wheel?

It will roll flatter on the road. A 7" rim will cause the edges of the tread to be off the road. You will be only riding on the middle 3/4 of the tread.

A 255 60 15 is pretty close in size to the factory G60 15 that was put on a 7" rim. I'm currently running 255 60's on 7" up front, and 275 60's on 8" out back.

And for the record...I also ran 275 60's on 7" Rallyes for YEARS with no problems. I did drop psi down to 28-30, but it never caused any wear issues or problems for well over 10 years.

A 255/6015 tire is pretty wide for a 7" wide wheel IMHO. I run both 235 and 255/60R15s (on 15x8 wheels on all four corners) and there's still plenty of bulge with the 255s- with 1" less wheel width, the bulge is even greater.

The general rule of thumb is to match rim width to read width, to use the tread width as previously stated. It stands to reason that the tire will wear better & respond better when cornering. It also looks better to me. I've used the same width trim rings (7") on a 7"/8" combo before and it didn't detract from appearance as far as I was concerned; having the 4 rings be the same style, shape & finish is more important to me.

I have 235/60 15 on the front and 255/60 15 on the rear of my GTXon 7" rims. It looks fine. I have 275/60 15s on my Coronet on 7". the rim could be a little wider on it.

Either will work fine.
Consider running a 245 up front.235's leave alot of gap between the tire and fender unless you lower the front ride height.

If you're buying new wheels, buy some 8" wide wheels for the back. if you already have 7" wheels, and want to go to a wider tire, yea, you can run 255s on there, but you have to watch the tire tread and adjust your airpressure accordingly.

a wide tread on a skinny tire, don't think of the tread as "lifting" on the edges, think more of the tire "ballooning" from air pressure, where the middle pushes out. lower air pressure allows it to fall back flat again.

I am running 255's on a 7in rim with no issues at all.I also agree you should go with 245's on the front, the 235's arent quite tall enough.

I've always been told that 235/60/15s were the biggest you could go on the front of an e-body.

I've seen bigger tires used up front on b-bodys but just assumed they had more space up front.

Ok, wait, is that for all 15x8 rims? Because I picked up a set of 15x8 Magnum 500 (without beauty rim) for what I thought was a really great deal....

nope, not true. I run 245/60-15s on my cuda up front. 275/60-15s on 8" rims on the back. I used to have 7" rims but went with 8" after 20 years and the tires fit them much better.

the lack of a trim ring bothers me a bit but I run the 7" rings so its not too bad

Interesting. I may start another thread on this topic to get to the bottom of this.

Wow, I thought my 235's were tight up front.
A 225x 65 might fit. i know the 215 x 65 fits.

I purchased WheelVintiques 15x8 Ralley wheels. The well in the center of the rim hoop is deep enough that the generic 15x8 trim rings WheelVintques sells won't allow the ring to pass by it, the fingers that hold the ring on didn't even come in contact with the rim. If you were to compare the Mopar trim ring that fits the 15x7 wheel the ID of the ring is much smaller than the ID of the generic 15x8 ring, that is there is more taper to the mopar ring.

Whether you can get a trim ring that fits tight to the center of the wheel depends on the well in the rim hoop and the back spacing of the wheel. If the wheels are Wheel Vintiques I would venture a guess that they use the same hoop but I would call and find out before spending money on rings that won't fit.
