why would this combo get 5.74MPG.

i have a 440/727 in a 70 b body with an 8 1/4 2.75 gear. the engine is a stock 77 440 out of a motor home only mods are ch4b intake, headers and 3310 holley. i am sure the carb has issues. seems like every other day i have to adjust the mixture screws to get it to run rite. the carb is over 20 yrs old with no known leaks although does seem to run very rich. should i try to rebuild this carb or replace it. if replacement should i go for a 600/650 instead. this is my daily driver for the foreseeable future.

any ideas greatly appreciated

thanks shane

600 Eddy 1405 & if a 1406 (elec choke) will need to mod the pulloff & slow the elec choke activation. Had one on a 440 C boat & plenty of power. I would mod your dist initial/total/springs/vac adv IN ORDER & consider (re)working the worst system which is the single ex and adv the cam 4 deg EDIT reread that you already have headers. A/F ratio??

Is this a joke?

There is a REASON why just about every manufacturer went to a "spreadbore" 4bbl design. Thermouqd, Quadrajet, whatever that Autolite thing was called, it was all the same strategy

SMALL front barrels and BIG secondary barrels.

Additionally, what are you running for timing, have you checked that the advance mechanism in the distributor is working right, and how far does it advance? Have you checked the vacuum advance? How hot does the engine run?

What condition is the engine, mileage, compression? What is the chances that the timing chain / sprockets (they are not "gears") is darn near worn, or that it needs a valve job or worse?

DO NOT rebuild the 3310, SELL it for whatever you can get and either buy a much smaller carb or get a Thermoquad/ Quadrajet

RR .... that ? And there is no need on a basic cruiser combo this guy has to have to spend huge $$$ on a rebuild. ALL that is really needed is a good FSM to do the job. Now IF he choses the hi$$ rebuilder route ... say with DS ... I would hope he would put the vent tubes IN the carb top ..

Could be those 2 o-rings down in the bottom of the Thermo quad when they go they eat fuel like it was free.

nope not a joke. my dam toyota took a crap so i had to throw this thing back together cuz i need it for transportation. the eng has 50K on it and pulls a steady 20in at idle. between working 12's and the weekends i havnt had time to really check the other items mentioned. it runs decent just uses alot of gas. i only got 107 miles out of 18.62 gals and only left base once

Carb too big, try a 600-650 Edelbrock or Holley, with vacuum secondarys.
Also
Motorhome engines do not have enough compression to be effecient, you will need to put some smaller chamber heads, mill the ones you have or put some higher compression pistons in the motor.

While I never checked it for mileage because my gas tank leaked if I filled it much above 1/2, I drove a bone stock 76 440 in my car for 7 years. I threw on a rebuilt pre-smogger thermoquad and the fuel mileage around town was actually quite decent as far as I'm concerned. A 600cfm edelbrock or a pre-smog thermoquad would both be good choices for your stocker IMO.

Re-read his original post. He's not running a thermoquad.

I was b' nice, and you'll notice I gave him some suggestions.

Someone else suggested checking for leaks. EXCELLENT Take a really good look, stuff like your filler cap, get out IMMEDIATELY after shutdown, do you smell gas anywhere?

I was taking a break from carb work; my allergies have been so bad!

As for 'removal' of the vent stacks, I have been doing this for 25 yrs and it does work. If you run a drop-base air cleaner, it is necessary on T.Q.'S to shorten the stack if not remove it. Several carb builders remove the vent stack also. On a T.Q., it works well as there is little or no chance the gas can flow out of the vent due to a well designed vent system coming off the float chambers.
