ok... I understand now. I'll get the solid lifters from crower, they aren't barbell type and they have a little oil hole at the bottom that I liked too. I should have just gotten those from the begining. I paid like $150 for these crappy 273 lifters too... I do everything twice no big deal...

thanks guys

If (like most here are thinking, including me) it is the lifters causing the problem, then there should have been plenty of oil and pressure to the bottom (rods/mains) of the engine as the bleed off would have been after them.

Before buying new lifters or doing any changes you should make an effort to verify the problem.. I'd suggest pulling the distributor & oil pump drive shaft then use a priming shaft & an electric drill to try pressurizing the oil system, first try seeing to galley plug perviously mentioned down through the distributor hole... If no problem is found there pull the oil filter & make sure the plug is installed... If you still haven't found a problem put the intake & give the lifters a good look, run the drill & turn the engine over, if a passage is opening you'll either see oil pouring into the valley area or pouring over the camshaft... If you still haven't seen a problem pull the timing cover & see if the galley plugs are installed up front.... Why buy lifters if they aren't your problem... They do work well with smaller cams & they are light.... BTW what are your cam specs...

I didn't prime this motor before I put it in... I couldn't find the oil pump shaft I have with the gear pressed off. I remember installing all of those oil plugs you guys are mentioning so I'm pretty sure it's the lifters. I got the cam reground by crower so the base circle of the cam is smaller, I think. I also got new pushrods from them because the old ones were too short. Maybe this was my hint that the lifters would be too low in the bore.

I'll pull off the intake and prime it like I should have in the first place then I'll let you guys know what happened

thanks for the help!!

FWIW the oip pump drive is a 5/16 hex... MP still sells the tool pretty cheap..

But I've seen it posted that you can get one of those paint stirring attachments for your drill & knock the fan blades off & have the same thing... Either way will work... Good Luck with it!!

Check your cam and lifters carefully, There's a chance you have no lobes left after starting without priming and low oil pressure.
Ask me how I know.

There is also a lifter galley plug next to the distributor gear which can be viewed with the distributor removed. It will bleed oil like crazy. Don't ask me how I know.

Been there/done that myself.

Did you reinstall the oil filter diverter plug, its the one that looks like a little freeze plug and gets installed under the rear main cap. You can check if it is their by removing the oil pressure line and insert a piece of wire. The wire should bottom out at about 7 3/16 inches, without this plug in place you will have oil pressure issues

I checked like you said and the wire bottoms out at 7 1/2".

If the plug wasn't in there where would the wire bottom out at?

I'm gonna prime it now

I primed it and right by the lifters a bunch of oil was coming out. I changed it to some crower ones I bought and the leaks went away and oil pressure went up to 75psi

thanks

Did you roll the engine over while priming.... at
least a few revolutions ... glad you found your issue
