Hey guys I just finished putting together my first race motor and I got to fire it up just now but at idle it only has like 5psi then I rev'd it up to about 3,000rpm and the oil pressure twitched up to 10psi maybe a little more for a split second... The engine sounds real good but the oil pressure has me wondering so I thought I'd ask you guys see if there is anything I should check so I don't mess anything up

IT's a 360 with a sold .522" cam and KB107 pistons One thing I was wondering is... I'm using the solid lifers that originally were intended for a 273, the race one with 10.5-1 compression. These lifters get skinny in the middle and I was wondering if I am loosing oil pressure because of that. Wondering if the oil holes that are in the lifter bores are different between the two blocks????

also the oil pump is a new stock one from napa

Or anything else you guys can think of why I am getting low oil pressure?

Barbell type lifters can uncover & become a huge internal leak, when running them you need to be aware of the issue & verify that it doesn't happen...

Another common issue is missing one of the oil galley plugs

By uncover your talking about the skinny part of the lifter giving too much clearance to the oil hole in the lifter bore, right? That's what I was thinking too. How do I check to see if this is happening?

The bar bell style lifters can create a open path for oil from the main feed galley into both the upper valley or below the valley in the cam tunnel depending on the base circle diameter of the cam and the lift....

Hello All of my engines I run a HV Oil pump and the PSI runs around 80 PSI Cold and 25 Warm and when you RPM UP The PSI gos back up. I think there is a oil plug out of the block and missing.I run Royal Purple Break in oil then change to GTX 10/40 AFTER BREAK IN OF THE ENGINE.There is a plug down in the distributor hole that some time forgets to be put back in the block check there also.

the skinny part of the lifters are creating giant oil leaks...bleeding off the oil pressure...

i would change lifters.....

ok... I understand now. I'll get the solid lifters from crower, they aren't barbell type and they have a little oil hole at the bottom that I liked too. I should have just gotten those from the begining. I paid like $150 for these crappy 273 lifters too... I do everything twice no big deal...

thanks guys

Always check oil pressure by priming the motor never start it to see what you have. With 5-10 psi you may want to order new bearings to.

No, The lifters were new. I don't have a part number or anything so that was the best way for me to identify them.

I only started the motor prolly 5 times at around 1500rpm for maybe 5 seconds each then the last time I started it I rev'd it up to like 2900rpm for like 4 seconds then I shut it off cause I figured something was wrong because oil pressure didn't pick up.

still think I should order some bearings?

Did you over tighten the oil presure line? I did that and I had a really slow to rise gauge. then the 2nd start up the thing didn't even move.

Pull the intake and prime it with a drill. Watch for any obvious oil leaks (internally) . I found an oil galley coming off the oil filter actually had due to bad casting flaked a piece off and blowing oil at the bottom of my intake ! I was able to sleeve the galley with some 1/2" tubing . That 340 oiled great after that .
Good Luck !

You have a couple of galley plugs on the front of the
engine behind the timing gear also that you might
have forgot.... pull the intake and start there...
didnt you see this when you primed the system

There is also a lifter galley plug next to the distributor gear which can be viewed with the distributor removed. It will bleed oil like crazy. Don't ask me how I know.

Also a plug bewteen the filter inlet/outlet passages. If the block was hot-tanked it could have come loose?

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

If you are using a 90* oil filter adapter, make sure you have the proper gasket between it and the block.
