I'm rebuilding my steering box (70 cuda manual box) I called steer and gear to see if they sold the parts or just do rebuilds. They said they will sell the parts but they size the balls in worm gear and bearings and fix some things in the case that will be worn. Does this sound legit or just a sales pitch. They also said the 20:1 gear will make the car very hard to turn and recommend not using it. Anybody used steer and gear or have any opinions on the 20:1 gear.

I do believe the higher end re-builders - Firm Feel and Steer and Gear - do take extra steps to fit and/or re-size parts for a tight and durable box. That's the benefit vs an available parts store rebuild. How much of that is needed on your particular box, I have no idea... it might turn out great with a basic rebuild or not.

I have no idea what shape the box is in. The car was apart when I bought it. The price seems fair but if I could get away with a reseal it would save me $225.00. I can rebuild it but I don't know what to look for.

Thats exactly what i'm saying. I can see a bad ball bearing or a pitted race or a worn shaft. I have no experience with steering boxes. I just didn't want to get sold something I didn't need. Let me put it this way. I would be disappointed if I sent it out and the place put new seal's and bearings in it packed it with grease and sent it back. I could do that. Is there something they do to the case or gears that the average guy can't do with special tools?
