Hi Guys... I have a 70 r/t six pack car with a factory shaker hood on it... according to the fender tag, it was a buldger hood car with spcl hood paint.. Along the years someone switched out the original hood for a shaker hood setup off of what I believe was a factory plum crazy 71 chally(I could see the original paint under the cheap orange repaint that they did) it still had the factory 71 latch, hood trim, and the actual shaker bubble was black... My question is... is there any speacial way to ID this hood as original? I know that it is a factory hood, but I'd like a way to point out to people that it is an original hood when they look at my fender tag at car shows and tell me that its not a factory N96 car....At least I can show 'em some proof that the parts or OE ..Thanks!

Post a GOOD photo of your hoods underside (straight on as you can get it) and I'll point out some stuff.

This is the best underhood shot that I currently have...All the photos that I have taken during the restoration process have been of the topside... I'm going to try and get out to the body shop tomorrow and see if I can snap a few good shots of the underside....

You couldn't get a Shaker on a 70 Challenger until April of 70.....I sold my 70 last year to a buddy (wish I didn't). I may have some pics to see if it has the "crumple zones" on it. Wondering now if 70-71 Shaker Challenger hoods were the same seeing how they finally started shipping them so late in the year.... Just a thought but probably they were different.

I know 'Cuda's were different but I have seen them mixed up as well.

If you crawl on the hood and crane your neck - maybe...

so If mine is visable.Does that mean the scoop is to low if decal is placed properly & this is on a cuda ?
Is there a rule of thumb for how far scoop should be up out of hood?
Sorry for the crazy question. But I think my scoop is sitting to low. thanks

Here is my buddy's 70 - hard to tell but I don't think I see any crumple zones on this one.

Do you have the trim ring on the hood? It doesn't look like its there in the pic. That would make the decal very visible. If you have a stock sixpack baseplate it should be the right height.

That appears to be an original. If someone installed a Harms Automotive Hood Conversion kit into an original flat hood and really did a good job it is possible that it's one of those. However looking at the accuracy of the spot welds, I'd say that the likelyhood of that is very remote.

Looks like the one in Scott's pic. I see the crumple areas that the pic of the 70 doesn't have.

ScottSmith... Looks as if our hoods differ a bit... Most noticeably is on the ends of the hoods... It looks as if your hood has rectangular "notches" running along the length of both sides of the hood, whereas mine does not.. Could this be early and late production changes? Is your hood a 70? I was also wondering what those little tabs just behind the hood pin holes were for? Any Thoughts?

The hood in my post is an over the counter NOS hood, it has LATE 1971 features. This does not factor into my id'ing an original hood however, I was only examining the under hood brace that is welded in the center.

I'm positive that the hood is original.. If seen in person there would be no doubt.. I even have the trim ring with the part numbers on it.. I also have a reproduction aluminum ring, which there is no comparison ... I was just wondering if there is any one distinct way that you can ID this sucker? I just want to be able to have some fire power when people point out that it's not an original N96 car

During my research on these shaker hoods, I read somewhere on here that there was only 330 some odd shaker hoods made for the challenger 70-71 production years... I didn't know that they could be purchased as an "over the counter" part...very interesting... I was always under the belief that these hoods were always very hard to get...even when buying a new challenger straight from the factory!

Here is my 71 Hemi Challenger at Etown in 1974. Note the factory shaker hood. Its an original rallye hood car, but the original owner bought the hood and all the pcs a few months after purchasing the car. I have all the pcs and the hood. If anyone needs to see anything let me know. I dropped my digital camera last week and havent had a chance to replace it, so if you want a pic, it will have to wait.
