With my steering on my Rampage... with the engine in where I have it and the steering rack just clearing the crank pulley the rod ends will have a big angle... not a big deal on a drag car but on a street car the two wheels turn at a different rate in a corner... I still need to put the proper wheel and tire on it to see if I can make a longer steering arm... which will help with slowing the steering rate and the turn radius... I can move the engine back 1" more which will help... I know how to get around this problem BUT it would look BAD... I can cut the tie rods and set them parallel them then weld a spacer in between.... but damn that would look UGLY and I'm sure people would say... what the heck did you do that for..... DAMN I dont know what to do..... gotta think

Well its not as bad as I figured but I will have to move the engine back that 1 1/4" that I have... I put the wheel on the spindle that I will run but I dont have the tires yet... but looking at the steering arm I can make them longer and should just clear the tire... I gotta get the tires before I can make sure... but things are looking better

Just set the engine back even more the csr will like it
I'm gonna move it back 1 1/4" but I wont go any farther, I want to have 19" from the front of the seat to the firewall... and the seat cant go back any more

I wouldnt change the cab... but I did give it some thought about cutting the fenders and moving the front wheels forward If I do have to cut the tie rods I like the idea of putting a boot over it... no one would know

I like the idea of moving the front wheels forward; it'd look better aesthetically, and give you some room.
I'd really like to keep it stock looking but if I need to move them I will

Yikes! I was thinking just a couple inches, centering the wheel/tire in the fender. Might be able to just move the front of the opening, depending on OD of the tire you run, and most people would likely not even notice, but the proportions would be better than the long stock overhang.
I dont think I'll have to move the tire forward IF I move the engine back the 1 1/4", make longer steering arms(which it could use anyways) and cutting the tie rod and putting a cover over it(I might not need to cut the tie rod ... I leave that as my last choice)... after I pick up my new hood tomorrow I'll take some measurements

I look at it this way...
As long as you have a legitimate answer for the "what the heck did you do that for", there was no alternative, and it's a sound way of doing it, don't worry about it. If you can live with it and it works, it is what it is. Custom building...fun stuff!
With custom stuff, there are no rules. You make them up as you go along.

You can usually angle the rods 3" from the steering centerline
I never heard that Bob... I'm sure that we would all love to have that angle from the steering arm to the rack at 90* and the farther off that angle it hurts more... plus the distance between the rack and the steering arm makes a big difference when you say that 3" number(10" vs 20") would more than double the angle with the 3" stager

I have my wheels out right now having the tires mounted so when I get them back I can see a bit better on the steering arm clearance... that will determine what I need to do

fLAMING RIVER makes different length racks. In my case I needed a longer one for my Roda Runner that the Pinto unit that was in it.As for making longer tie rod can't you use a Heim end to replace what you have now and make that longer by using a fresh piece of tubing threaded to accept the Heim?

Its not the length of the rack its the location of it fore and aft in the car... I'd like to move it rearward in my chassis so the end of the steering arm is straight across from the rack centerline... once I get my wheels and tires back I set it up and take a pic
